Background of the Study

Social determinants of health are the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work, and age. These factors, which include socioeconomic status, education, employment, social support, and access to healthcare, have a profound impact on the health outcomes of individuals and communities. In Kano State, one of Nigeria's most populous regions, social determinants such as poverty, limited access to education, and a lack of healthcare infrastructure play a critical role in shaping healthcare outcomes (Nwachukwu & Musa, 2023). Despite significant healthcare reforms in Nigeria, there remains a considerable gap in health outcomes between wealthy and marginalized populations, with disparities in access to quality healthcare and health services.

Kano State, with its large rural population and high levels of poverty, faces several challenges related to social determinants. For instance, rural dwellers often lack access to essential healthcare services, which leads to poor health outcomes, such as high maternal mortality rates, limited child healthcare, and widespread preventable diseases (Ahmed et al., 2024). Education, particularly female education, has also been shown to correlate with better health outcomes, as educated women are more likely to seek healthcare services for themselves and their children (World Bank, 2023). This study will explore how these social determinants contribute to the health outcomes in Kano State and propose recommendations for addressing these challenges to improve healthcare access.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the importance of social determinants in influencing healthcare outcomes, there is limited research specifically addressing how these factors affect health outcomes in Kano State. The impact of education, socioeconomic status, and access to healthcare on health outcomes is poorly understood in the context of Kano. This study aims to fill this gap by evaluating how these social determinants shape healthcare outcomes and contribute to health disparities in the state.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the impact of social determinants such as socioeconomic status, education, and access to healthcare on health outcomes in Kano State.

2. To investigate the role of social support and community networks in improving healthcare outcomes.

3. To recommend policies and strategies for addressing social determinants and improving healthcare access in Kano State.

Research Questions

1. How do socioeconomic factors such as income and employment status affect healthcare outcomes in Kano State?

2. What role does education, particularly female education, play in improving healthcare outcomes in Kano State?

3. How does access to healthcare services influence health outcomes in Kano State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Socioeconomic status has a significant impact on healthcare access and health outcomes in Kano State.

2. Higher levels of education, especially among women, are associated with better healthcare outcomes in Kano State.

3. Increased access to healthcare services leads to improved health outcomes in Kano State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on residents of Kano State, particularly examining how social determinants influence healthcare outcomes. Limitations include potential biases in self-reporting, difficulties in measuring all relevant social determinants, and the challenges of obtaining accurate data from rural populations.
